Quebradas Back Country Scenic Byway
A rugged 24-mile road east of the Rio Grande covering beautiful land with chances to see wildlife and outstanding geologic rock formations. Excellent vistas along the river.
This BLM byway gives you a chance to view protected wildlife of two different wildlife refuges, LaJoya State Game Refuge and Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. Sevilleta is a national research facility open to the public during the annual open house. Both Sevilleta and La Joya are open for public hunting of dove and water fowl, but there is no camping and only steel shot is allowed. Check with the Chamber on the Refuge's walking trail.
Nearby is Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge known for the sandhill cranes, some whopping cranes, and thousands of Canadian geese. Each fall the Festival of Cranes brings birdwatchers from across the globe to view the migrating flocks at the winter nesting area. Grain fields nearby provide forage.
Quebradas is accessible from Interstate 25 via County Road A-135, or from US380 on County Road A-129. Check the weather and remember this is not a paved byway.
