Truth or Consequences / Elephant Butte
For the past 50 years, Truth or Consequences has been one of the American Southwest's best-kept secrets. A small resort town with a year round population of just over 8,000, this little town with a big name was overshadowed by its big brother, the neighboring city of Las Cruces.
While most towns in northern New Mexico attract tourists to their ski resorts and chic Southwestern-style vacation homes, Truth or Consequences has remained a lesser-known haven for nature lovers and those who want variety in their surroundings with a mild climate. As a result, the town has remained unspoiled and has not seen local development run rampant or real estate prices rise beyond the reach of long time locals. Here the breathtaking sandstone bluffs, nearby state parks and sunny, deep blue skies remain the biggest neighborhood attractions.
Situated on the banks of the Rio Grande in southwest New Mexico, Truth or Consequences has long been a preferred vacation site New Mexico natives. Traditionally, they have come to bathe in the soothing hot springs or partake in the many recreational opportunities at the two large lakes nearby. In the past decade, however, Truth or Consequences has begun to garner more national praise. In 2008, Budget Travel designated T or C as one of the top ten "Coolest Small Towns" in America.
Located between Las Cruces and Albuquerque on Interstate 25, Truth or Consequences is renowned for its year-round wonderful climate, recreational facilities, and the mineral waters.
The hot days of July are tempered by the cooling nights. Gentle winters make T or C a haven for the folks that we like to call "snowbirds". If you are here in either the autumn or spring, it's like finding a little piece of paradise. And if you think the stars come out in Hollywood, you should see the heavens here at night.
Nearby Elephant Butte and Caballo lakes offer boating, fishing, water-skiing and great camping opportunities. There are mountain biking trails nearby that will challenge all. The hiking in the surrounding mountains is rugged. Some of the best hunting and fishing guides in the Southwest make their home in and around Truth or Consequences area. The historical mining ghost towns close by provide pleasant hunting for "rock hounds" and history buffs.
The City of Elephant Butte is four miles north, along the Elephant Butte Lake State Park and was named for the extinct volcanic cinder cone that resembles an elephant located at the south end of the lake, by the dam.
Elephant Butte offers travelers great motels, restaurants, churches, service stations, bait shops, banks, auto/boat sales & repair, gift shops, fishing & tour guide services and more. Part of the Geronimo Byway, Elephant Butte is a hub for day trips to local historical sites and the Gila National Forest. This clean and quiet community is a great place to get away from it all for a day or a lifetime. The climate is ideal for year-round outdoor activities and special events. So come join us!
Oral history tells us that the Chiricahua Apache leader Geronimo frequented this area for the soothing relief found in the mineral waters. Today, folks from all over the world visit the many mineral bath houses and spas for our geothermal baths.
Truth or Consequences has a strong sense of tradition, with our eyes on the needs of the future. The leaders and workers within the City's government understand those needs and work together to provide them. With the selection of Sierra County as the home of Spaceport America, located 31 miles southeast of Truth or Consequences, our government and local leaders are teaming up to initialize the next "giant leap for mankind".
