Golf: Rio Mimbres Golf Course in Deming
On the web:
www.deminggolf.comThe Deming Golf Course, the Rio Mimbres is located in the high desert town of Deming. Situated in Luna County, New Mexico at 4,335 feet elevation and just about 50 miles east of the Continental Divide.
Starting on the corner of Pine and Country Club Road on the east end of Deming, this 18-hole public golf course sprawls east and south. Wonderful views of mountains—Cooke's Peak to the north, and the Floridas, southeast—can be enjoyed as one hikes or plays the course with its pleasant lakes and paths, Rio Mimbres Country Club is on the grounds, as well as custom built homes.
As part of the Gadsden Purchase in mid-1800s and home to the second transcontinental railroad, the Silver Spikes, Deming lies within the Chihuahuan Desert. The golf course is named after the Rio Mimbres, one of the rivers that flow through Luna County. Like most Chihuahuan Desert Rivers, the Rio Mimbres, “River of the Willows” is born high in the mountains, fed by winter snows and summer thunderstorms, and eventually flowing out into the open desert. It disappears after it exits the mountains. The normally shallow flow simply sinks into the desert, leaving an empty bed to wind for miles through the landscape like a ghost river.
With over 340 days of sunshine, mild winters, and dry summers, this beautiful golf course is available for play nearly every day of the year. With four sets of tee boxes, this course is suitable for all golfers from scratch to high handicap, from beginner to expert and from young to old.
Walking is allowed, electric carts are available, and private carts are welcomed.
Memberships are available and golf is open to the public.
