Hidalgo County's excellent climate and central location offers a variety of outdoor recreation. Most popular are rockhounding and hunting. Small game, including quail and dove, are plentiful in the area. For big game, hunters from all over the world find their way to Hidalgo County in search of Coues deer, javelina and mule deer. Professional guide services are available.

The Rockamania Gem & Mineral Society offers year-round rockhounding activities. Visit the annual Rockamania swap meet and their arts and crafts show. A lapidary shop and field trips are available.

Motel Drive in downtown Lordsburg parallels the famous Butterfield Trail. It is said by some that you can still hear the hoof beats of the horses and the shouting commands of the stage driver if you listen carefully.

Hidalgo County is home to two ghost towns. Just three miles southwest is Shakespeare rising from a series of boom and bust cycles in the mining industry. The Butterfield Stage stopped regularly in Shakespeare. Enjoy the Stratford Hotel, the bar in the Grant House, and a tour of the old blacksmith shop.

There are regular tours and re-enactment days, so check with the Chamber or the NM Visitor Information Center for dates and times.

Just west of Lordsburg about three miles east of the Arizona/New Mexico border is the old railroad town of Steins (pronounced Stee-ns). Today it's open Friday through Monday to visitors on I-10. They usually close the first 3 weeks of December. Check locally.
