Hidalgo County is home to two ghost towns. Just three miles southwest is Shakespeare rising from a series of boom and bust cycles in the mining industry. The Butterfield Stage stopped regularly in Shakespeare. Enjoy the Stratford Hotel, the bar in the Grant House, and a tour of the old blacksmith shop.
There are regular tours and re-enactment days, so check with the Chamber or the NM Visitor Information Center for dates and times.
Just west of Lordsburg about three miles east of the Arizona/New Mexico border is the old railroad town of Steins (pronounced Stee-ns). Today it's open Friday through Monday to visitors on I-10. They usually close the first 3 weeks of December. Check locally.
