  • Aguirre Spring National Recreation Site
    Open year round, Aguirre Spring is a great place to hike, bike, camp or have a picnic in the breathtaking mountain scenery. Horse trails are also available. At the top of San Augustin Pass, you can see the Rio Grande to the west and on a clear day, the White Sands National Monument glimmering in the east. Bring your own water.

  • Bataan Death March Memorial
    The Bataan Death March Memorial is the only national memorial to the victims and survivors of the Bataan death March. Those in the March came from all parts of the nation, including 300 New Mexico communities. About 300 Marchers came from southwest New Mexico alone.

  • Branigan Cultural Center
    The Branigan Cultural Center has as its focus the history and culture of the region. Built during the Great Depression to serve as the main Las Cruces library, the building was rededicated as a city cultural facility in 1981.

  • Butterfield Trail
    Stagecoaches of the Butterfield Overland Mail Co. began carrying passengers and mail from St. Louis to San Francisco, across southern New Mexico, in 1858. The 2,795-mile journey took 21-22 days. In 1861 the service was re-routed through Salt Lake City. From Mesilla west, the trail paralleled the present-day route of I-10.

  • Dripping Springs Wildlife Area
    This hike up the Organ Mountains takes you to the ruins of Dripping Springs resort, a former hotel for tuberculosis patients.

  • Fort Selden State Monument
    Long before it was ever Fort Selden this site was recognized by Native Americans for its strategic location and over time became one of the Southwest’s primary trade routes. Established by the U.S. government in 1865, the fort housed troops who protected settlers from desperados and Apache Indians.

  • Gadsden Museum
    This museum is a must see for history buffs. It recounts the history of famed local personality Albert Jennings Fountain, whose feud with Albert Fall of the national Teapot Dome scandal, as well as the legend of the Hermit at La Cueva. Artifacts of the Gadsden Purchase of 1854, which made this part of the U.S. no longer the territory of Mexico.

  • Kilbourne Hole National Natural Landmark
    A remnant of an ancient volcanic explosion, Kilbourne Hole was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1975. This crater can be found in a desert basin between the East Potrillo Mountains and the Rio Grande in southern Dona Ana County.

  • Las Cruces / Old Mesilla / Hatch

Old Mesilla 2 miles to the southwest offers an opportunity to browse in shops and absorb its history. Hatch, known for its chile, is located north of Las Cruces on Interstate 25.

  • Las Cruces Museum of Natural History
    This museum features live animals and plants of the Chihuahuan desert, hands-on science and natural history exhibits. Visiting shows run the gamut from dinosaurs to the solar system. Located in the Mesilla Valley Mall.

  • Leasburg Dam State Park
    Leasburg Dam, built in 1908, is one of the oldest diversion dams in New Mexico. It heads a canal system that irrigates extensive farmlands south to Las Cruces. Enjoy nearby Fort Selden with its Buffalo Soldier history and summer weekend re-enactments.

  • Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park
    Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park New Mexico’s newest State Park is set to open in December, 2008. The park is located along the western bank of the Rio Grande southwest of the town of Mesilla on the westerb bank of the Rio Grande.

  • Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery

  • Railroad Museum
    The first Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe (AT&SF) train arrived in Las Cruces on April 26, 1881. Passenger service continued in Las Cruces until 1968. The first depot in Las Cruces was a wood frame building. In 1910, the present Mission Revival style depot was completed. The railroad lengthened the freight section in 1961. Freight trains stopped service to Las Cruces in 1988.

  • War Eagles Museum
    This collection of antique WW-II aircraft at Santa Teresa, NM, is rounded out by other glimpses of history. The planes are primarily fighter planes from the 1941-45 conflict.

  • White Sands National Monument
    Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Here, great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert and created the world's largest gypsum dune field. Lake Lucero is in the western portion of White Sands that lies within Old West Country. Occasionally, the lake fills with water.
