  • State Bike Route 18: Cliff to Deming
State Bike Route 18 will be signed in Fall 2007 along US180 between Deming and Cliff, a distance of just under 80 miles. The western part of the route will follow US180 between Cliff and Silver City, a segment of both the Tour of the Gila, New Mexico's largest stage race, and of Adventure Cycling Association's "Southern Tier Route" for cross-country cyclists. Located at the convergence of the Southern Tier Route and Adventure Cycling Associations's Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, Silver City offers a bounty of bicycling opportunities. North of Silver City, the Southern Tier Route includes a challenging detour to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument via two narrow state highways, NM15 and NM35. State Bike Route 18 diverges from the Southern Tier Route east of Silver City in Santa Clara, where the route mapped by Adventure Cycling Association heads east toward the Rio Grande on scenic but mountainous and narrow NM152. East of Silver City, State Bike Route 18 will provide local connections through wide paved shoulders to the nearby communities of Santa Clara, Bayard and Hurley. Thirteen miles south of Hurley and four miles up NM61, camping is available at City of Rocks State Park. The City of Deming lies 23 miles further south on US180 at I-10.
